Every September, the European Heritage Days invite us to cross the thresholds of monuments, historic homes, and places usually inaccessible. In Saint-Malo, a city of shipowners, privateers, and great navigators, this event takes on a special resonance.

From the Château du Colombier, a four-star hotel housed in an elegant 18th-century malouinière, set out to discover the architectural, maritime, and cultural heritage of the corsair city.

When will the 2026 Heritage Days take place?

The 43rd edition of the European Heritage Days will take place on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, 2026. Some events will also be offered starting Friday, September 18.

Two themes will be highlighted: "Photography Heritage" and "Endangered Heritage: Revive, Resist, Reimagine". Guided tours, special openings, and historical itineraries will offer new perspectives on Saint-Malo's monuments and help understand the challenges of their preservation.

Explore the ramparts of the corsair city

To start this cultural weekend in Saint-Malo, the guided tour of the corsair city is a must. From the esplanade Saint-Vincent, the route leads to the ramparts, the citadel, and the main monuments of Intra-Muros.

Nearly two kilometers long, the enclosure offers magnificent views of the Fort National, the Grand Bé, the port, and the Sillon beach. The guide will recount the golden age of maritime trade, the fortifications designed by Garangeau, and the history of the famous Malouin privateers.

Guided tours of the corsair city are scheduled for September 19 and 20, 2026. Reservation is recommended.

Discover the maritime heritage of Saint-Malo

The identity of Saint-Malo is inseparable from the sea. On the occasion of the 2026 Heritage Days, the Saint-Louis quay will host a meeting dedicated to the preservation of a three-masted ship. Visitors will be able to discover the gestures, materials, and skills necessary for the conservation of large sailing ships.

On Friday, September 18, the École nationale supérieure maritime will also open its Paramé campus. This exceptional visit will allow observing the bridge and engine simulators used to train future merchant marine officers. Admission is free, but spaces are limited, and reservation is mandatory.

Enter the reserves of the Grande Passerelle

Lovers of old books will be able to enter the reserves of the René-Couanau library, within the Grande Passerelle.

Rarely presented works will allow a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation of written heritage. This commented visit, organized on Saturday, September 19, will perfectly illustrate the themes of the 2026 edition: preserving memory, protecting fragile collections, and passing on documents to future generations. The visit to the library reserves is free, with reservation.

Follow in the footsteps of the Resistance in Saint-Malo

To discover a more recent period of Malouin history, the digital tour "Saint-Malo, City in Resistance" offers a walk punctuated by riddles and historical documents.

Starting from the esplanade Saint-Vincent, this itinerary revisits the life of the city during World War II and the actions of the Resistance networks. Accessible for free via the Baludik app, this self-guided tour will be available from September 18 to 20, 2026.

Visit Dol-de-Bretagne and Cancale

The European Heritage Days also offer a great opportunity to explore the areas around Saint-Malo.

In Dol-de-Bretagne, a guided tour will explore the former episcopal city, its ramparts, half-timbered houses, and the Maison des Petits Palets, considered one of the oldest houses in Brittany. Tours are scheduled for Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20.

In Cancale, the "Cancale, the Maritime" tour will lead walkers through the Houle port, between fishermen's houses and shipowners' residences. The tour will end with an oyster tasting from the bay, combining maritime heritage and Breton gastronomy.

Prepare your heritage weekend in Saint-Malo

Many tours are free or offered at a reduced rate, but capacity can be limited. It is advisable to book quickly and check the official program of the 2026 European Heritage Days before departure.

To fully enjoy the weekend, plan comfortable shoes and alternate between guided tours, walks on the ramparts, and gourmet breaks in the corsair city.

A cultural stay at the Château du Colombier
